Body image refers to how one feels about his/her physical body. Social media is a place of breeding ground for unrealistic body image ideals. According to an American Psychological Association (APA) study, exposure to images of perfect bodies on social media sites like Instagram leads to a negative body image among youngsters.

Most social media users, particularly teenagers, are likely to internalize these unrealistic beauty standards; hence, they become dissatisfied with their bodies. Women, specifically, are usually placed under the pressure of having a certain body shape, which is typically associated with thinness and tanned features. This may leads to unhealthy behaviours, including restrictive eating, over-exercising, or much more just to meet the beauty standards made by social media.

Moreover, just to look more "picture perfect", these filters and editing apps have made the problem even worse by making unrealistic beauty standards and even more. The spreaout of these photoshopped pictures everywhere makes for a self-criticism loop.

The University of Pennsylvania conducted a study that discovered that individuals who spent more time browsing social media sites were more likely to experience anxiety, depression, and loneliness, which directly impacts their self-esteem. The more one compares their life with the flawlessly presented perfect lives of others, the more inferior they feel, and this helps to develop a negative self-image.

We have made a key measure of boosting our self-esteem by the heights of our likes and comments. When social media posts don't receive the expected number of likes or comments, the rejection causes immediate harm to our mental health and self satisfaction. This cycle of external validation can be extremely emotionally damaging, as it is making people to rely on others' opinions to feel good about themselves.

The Role of Influencers and Celebrities

Celebrities and social media influencers are the most powerful agents in setting beauty standards. Their postings of videos and pictures frequently showcase highly edited photos, which simply help to create a beauty standard for the world. When influencers endorse these multiple beauty products, exercise routines, or cosmetic procedures, they can unintentionally reinforce a narrow view of beauty that excludes the diversity among body types, skin tone, and even facial features. 

While a few influencers and celebrities are promoting to adopt body positivity by posting unedited photos or endorsing self-acceptance, most of them still don’t embrace their beauty as it is and tend to follow the beauty standards, causing body dissatisfaction.

Although it cannot be denied that the effects of social media are mostly negative in nature on self-esteem and body image, it must be noted that there is potential for good, too. Sites like Instagram and TikTok have given immense rise to body-positive culture, where people do praise body diversity to combat unrealistic beauty expectations. Hence, social media can be a great source for body positivity. 

Numerous users are there who post unedited photographs, love their natural bodies, and promote self-acceptance. These movements are slowly transforming the status, creating a culture of acceptance and inclusivity.
