Understanding Heart Disease: Causes, Risks, and Prevention

What is Heart Disease?

The term “heart disease” covers different conditions that affect the heart and blood vessels. The most common type is coronary artery disease, which happens when the blood vessels that supply the heart become blocked or narrowed. This can lead to chest pain, shortness of breath, or even a heart attack.

Major Causes and Risk Factors

1.Unhealthy Diet

Eating too much fried, oily, or processed food increases cholesterol and clogs the arteries.

2.Lack of Exercise

A sedentary lifestyle weakens the heart and raises the risk of obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure.

3.Smoking and Alcohol

Both damage the blood vessels and put extra strain on the heart.

4.High Blood Pressure

Constant high pressure in the arteries makes the heart work harder, eventually wearing it down.

5.Diabetes

Uncontrolled blood sugar damages the blood vessels and nerves that control the heart.

6.Obesity

Being overweight increases the risk of heart disease by raising cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar.

7.Stress

Chronic stress releases hormones that increase heart strain and unhealthy coping habits like overeating or smoking.

8.Family History

If heart disease runs in your family, your chances of developing it are higher.

Signs and Symptoms

•Chest pain or pressure (angina)

•Shortness of breath

•Pain in the arms, neck, or back

•Dizziness or fainting

•Fatigue

Sometimes, especially in women and diabetics, heart disease may be “silent” and not show obvious symptoms until it becomes severe.

Prevention: Protecting Your Heart

•Eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

•Exercise at least 30 minutes a day, most days of the week.

•Avoid smoking and limit alcohol.

•Manage stress through relaxation, prayer, meditation, or hobbies.

•Get regular health check-ups to monitor blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar
